How to Increase the Size of an EBS Volume Attached to a Linux Server in AWS

In this article ,we will see Increase the Size of an EBS Volume Attached to a Linux Server

Implementation Steps

  1. Launch Instance/Linux Server.
  2. Connect to Linux Server through putty then verify size of volume.
  3. Increase size of volume.
  4. Reboot Instance.
  5. Connect to Linux Server through putty then verify size of volume.

First, we need to AWS Console page by using below link.

https://aws.amazon.com/console/

Click on sign in to Console button.

Logging to aws account

Login using username & password and click on sign in.

Enter to AWS Management Console

We can see the AWS Management Console Dashboard.

Go to Services, under the compute module click EC2 service to open.

Launch Instance

Please check below link to Launch Linux Server.

Launch Linux Launch Linux Server

We can see Linux Server “My Linux” which was created earlier.

Connect to Linux Server through putty then verify size of volume

Open Linux Server terminal, Run the command “df –h”. It will display the drive’s details before resizing.

Increase size of volume

Go to Volumes, Select your Volume  “My Linux”, click on Modify Volume in the Actions.

Enter the number of GB you want in the Size field  “50” then click on Modify.

Click on Yes.

We can see Modify Volume Request Succeeded then click on Close.

Hit refresh, we can see the volume has been increased to 50 GiB successfully.

Reboot Instance

Go to Instances and select your Linux Server.

In the Actions,click on reboot under Instance State.

The Linux Server has been rebooted successfully.

Connect to Linux Server through putty then verify size of volume

Open Linux Server terminal, Run the command “df –h” again to check the size of the root device.

The volume has been increased to 50GiB successfully.
